Leon Edwards (born August 25, 1991) is a British professional MMA fighter of Jamaican origin. He now fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in the Welterweight category, where he is the current UFC Welterweight Champion. Edwards has been a professional fighter since 2011, and he formerly competed for BAMMA, where he was the BAMMA Welterweight Champion. At the age of nine, Edwards relocated to Birmingham, England, and when he was thirteen, his father was shot and killed in a nightclub in London. Along with his social circle, he became involved in illicit activities such as drug dealing, street fighting, and weapon possession, but at the age of 17, his mother convinced him to join an MMA club. Edwards then agreed to terms with Fight UK MMA. He made his promotion debut against Damian Zlotnicki, defeating him through technical knockout in the first round. He fought two more fights for the company, winning against Pawel Zwiefka and losing through DQ due to an illegal knee.
