What happened to Evie in Manifest? (Who was Evie to Michaela?)

Manifest season 4 part 1 is streaming now on Netflix and the arrival of new episodes is likely to have some fans asking a lot of questions about past seasons.

Across the season, we revisit many storylines introduced across the first three seasons of the show which end up being connected to the larger storyline told across the season. Many of the storylines revisited in the season share connections to the season’s underlying mystery about 828, the Callings, and the Death Date, but the revisiting of past stories isn’t exclusively reserved to those three topics.

One thread that is revisited several times across the season via quick mentions is the events surrounding Michaela’s friend Evie, who is named dropped several times across the season. So what exactly is her connection to Michaela and what happened to her which is haunting Michaela across the fourth season?

If you can’t fully recall who Evie was, it’s likely because the character only appeared in one episode of the show way back in Manifest season 1 but she made a major impact on Michaela and her journey across the show.

Evie was one of Michaela’s closest friends growing up and the two were almost like sisters. As we eventually learn, Evie sadly died in a car accident which Michaela blames herself for to this day.

In season 3 we learn that Evie and Michaela got into a heated argument after a night out drinking. Michaela is adamant that they take an Uber instead of attempting to drive home, but Evie is set on driving home. Despite her better judgment, Michaela gives in and offers to drive them back home and the pair end up getting into a car accident which results in Evie’s death.

Across the fourth season of Manifest, we see Michaela struggling with Evie’s death due in large part to the anniversary of her passing. It’s clear Michaela is still haunted by what happened to her friend as we see her struggling with those feelings of guilt at various points in the season including via a Calling that transports Michaela back to the night of Evie’s death.

For the most part, Evie’s only presence in the season comes via the mentions of her by Michaela and via the flashbacks to her death; however, Evie does appear at one point in season 4 part 1 in a truly shocking scene.

In the season 4 part 1 finale, Angelina uses the Omega Sapphire to create a fake Calling which causes Michaela to see her dead friend. Angelina preys on the guilt Michaela feels about her friend’s death to create a much-needed distraction to get herself out of a bind.

Given how many times Evie was name-dropped across the season, we should have seen an appearance from the character coming in the final episode and it was definitely a brilliant way to bring the character back into the fold after foreshadowing her return in the episodes leading up to the finale.
