Was that Richard Armitage's real penis in Obsession on Netflix?

Move over Sex/Life, a new steamy drama is making waves on the platform, and this one is much darker than the Sarah Shahi-led series. Obsession starring Richard Armitage and Charlie Murphy is an erotic thriller based on the novel Damage by Josephine Hart. It follows an accomplished surgeon who seems to have everything, a big house, wealth, a beautiful wife, and kids—but throws it all away when he embarks on an affair with his son’s fiancée Anna (Murphy).

William (Armitage) and Anna’s affair is more than just a quick tryst. They quickly begin to push their dynamic by experimenting with BDSM and power play within their relationship. It doesn’t take long for things to become rather twisted as William’s obsession with Anna grows.

Given the nature of the show, it’s not surprising that Obsession features explicit sex scenes and nudity. But how much of the nudity is real?

It has not been officially confirmed whether or not the actor opted to go full-frontal or use prosthetics, but it seems likely that, yes, that was Richard Armitage’s real body in the buff.

During an interview with Hello! Magazine, Armitage discussed the appeal of doing a show like Obsession and working closely with an intimacy coordinator. He spoke of approaching those scenes with a European mindset, thinking of it similarly to how the French view their cinema: “their view of the human body and their view of relationships and intimacy.”

When asked about whether filming the nude scenes was liberating for him, this is what the actor had to say:

"It really was. My attitude is ‘It’s the body, it’s the human body’. Just be a little bit laissez-faire about it. If you are uncomfortable with it, then it’s your problem. Don’t be uncomfortable about it."

Based on that statement, we can safely assume that the actors were legitimately doing everything themselves without using CGI, stunt doubles, or prosthetics. Armitage repeatedly praises intimacy coordinator Adelaide Waldrop for helping them choreograph the intimate scenes and stepping in to assist with directing and offer a psychological perspective.

Obsession is now streaming on Netflix.
