Miley Cyrus changes lyrics of song to include ‘you’re gay’
Miley Cyrus changed the lyrics to her popular song “7 Things” while performing in Lexington, Kentucky at the beginning of the month. Instead of singing “you’re vain, your games, you’re insecure,” she very clearly said “you’re vain, you’re gay, you’re insecure.” (Video above.)
This week’s Star Magazine featured a photo of Miley using a teleprompter at that very concert in Lexington. The teleprompter reportedly included the lyrics to her songs and a reminder of the city she was in, so it’s not like she has a decent excuse for substituting lyrics. (Bruce Springsteen could use one of those.) Plus, that’s a hit song. She most likely knows the words and deliberately changed them.
This isn’t the first time Miley has made an arguably non-deliberate offensive gaffe. Miley was photographed making the “slant eyes” gesture with a bunch of friends earlier this year. The gesture is incredibly offensive to Asian people, and Miley initially blew off the backlash over the photo, writing that she was being targeted and that people were making a bigger deal out of it than it warranted. “Well, I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context! In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new ‘BAD GIRL!’” She eventually issued a sincere and contrite-sounding apology about a week later when she either realized the error of her ways or succumbed to pressure to sound sorry.
What is Miley going to say if this blows up into a bigger scandal? I know kids think it’s ok to use “gay” as an insult, but it’s not and there’s a movement to get them to stop. My just-turned five year-old son recently asked me why his friends were calling him “gay” and what that meant. Somehow this upset me more than any swear word could. I told him that they shouldn’t say that because “gay” isn’t a bad word. I explained that his aunt is gay and it just means that a woman is with another woman or a man is with another man. I told him that it hurts peoples’ feeling who are gay when other people say it as if it’s a bad word.
Miley is a role model to so many kids and she should have more sense than to change her lyrics to make “gay” sound like an insult. It’s bad enough that she’s performing in shorts that are so tight and short that it looks like she has a perma-wedgie. The girl is 16 years old. She should cover her ass in more ways than one.
