Jason Statham, super skinny from his ‘rice & spinach’ diet: would you hit it?

Jason Statham

These are photos of Jason Statham a few weeks ago on the set of the Heat remake in New Orleans. We didn’t cover these photos until now because (sadly) Statham isn’t a huge conversation maker. Finally, I now have an excuse to admit that news of this project made me shudder momentarily until I realized that this is not a remake of the 1995 film starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro but of the1986 film starring Burt Reynolds. I’m a huge fan of the former movie but have never viewed the latter, so I have no strong feelings about what will probably be a butchered reboot … because most remakes these days are absolutely atrocious to the spirit of the original.

Anyway, you may have noticed that Jason looks nearly emaciated in these photos compared to his former burly self. It was only a couple of months ago that he brought out the big Statham guns for Men’s Fitness! However, he has obviously lost a lot of weight for this movie — to play a gambling addict and bodyguard, which seems strange to me. If Jason’s playing a bodyguard, wouldn’t he want to keep his muscles intact? Maybe there’s something about this movie’s bodyguard character that I’m not aware of, but I’m sort of stumped. The Daily Star is also reporting that jason has been eating nothing but brown rice and spinach every day so that he can look “lean and mean” for this role. Is he succeeding in the “mean” department?

Movie tough guy Jason Statham has been warned his health is at serious risk due to a new fad diet. The Hollywood star, whose films include the Crank series, has worried friends and family by eating just brown rice and dry spinach every day.

A source said: “Jason is determined to be lean and mean and will not touch anything other than these two ingredients. He’s desperate to stay hot in Hollywood.” Statham, 45, will star as gambling addict and bad-boy bodyguard Nick Escalante in a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds film Heat.

“It’s a requirement of this role to be in top shape,” added our source. “He is shooting in New Orleans so he is surrounded by rich, fattening food. He even has his assistant go out to the cooking area on set and order his rice and spinach so he doesn’t need to look at everything else.”

New Orleans nutritionist Judy Rupp told the Daily Star Sunday: “The premise behind the brown rice detox diet is that brown rice is eaten because it is a whole grain and the fibre plays a role in cleansing your system.

“This is the kind of diet you would see Asian fighters use in order to create a lean physique ideal for fighting. It is not a healthy or balanced approach to dieting as it lacks necessary nutrients and should only be done for seven days or so in order to cleanse the system. I would strongly advise Jason to reassess this strict diet and include other nutrients.”

I guess this new look is just for this movie, right? One can only hope. While I can see the value of Matthew McConaughey’s recent weight loss because he was playing an AIDS patient, I honestly don’t see why the Statham would want to pull such drastic measures for an action film. Here are photos of Jason on the set of Homefront last October. Hopefully, he’ll look like this again in short order.
