Is historical action film Emancipation starring Will Smith on Netflix?
Will Smith returns to the big screens (and on streaming) in his latest film, Emancipation! Are you excited to see the actor in his next role? You might be wondering whether the historical drama is streaming on Netflix.
Joining Smith onscreen are actors Ben Foster as Jim Fassel, Charmaine Bingwa as Dodienne, Gilbert Owuor as Gordon, Mustafa Shakir as Lt. Andrew Cailloux, Steven Ogg as Sergeant Howard, Grant Harvey as Leeds, Ronnie Gene Blevins as Harrington, Michael Luwoye as John, and Aaron Moten as Knowls.
The behind-the-scenes team includes director Antoine Fuqua, writer William N. Collage, and executive producers James Lassiter, Heather Washington, Cliff Roberts, Glen Basner, and Scott Greenberg. Smith also served as one of the producers on the project.
The production is based on the story of a real escaped enslaved man named Peter (Will Smith) and is an adaption of true events. With such an important topic, I’m sure many are interested in watching the film. Can you find it on Netflix? We’ve got the answer for you below!
Unfortunately, if you were hoping the historical drama would be streaming on Netflix, that’s not the case. The movie is an Apple Original Film, meaning it’s only available to watch with Apple TV+. The movie will start streaming on Dec. 9, 2022.
If you’d like to watch it on the big screen, that’s also an option. Apple Studios also debuted the film in cinemas on Dec. 2. I know it’s disappointing when a highly-anticipated movie isn’t on the streaming service you’re subscribed to. But this one is definitely worth checking out if you can!
Emancipation centers around Will Smith’s character, Peter, who escapes his enslavers. His faith and love for his family keep him going in the fight towards freedom and facing the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana, Apple TV+ shares.
The film is based on photos of escaped American, Gordon, who was looked over at a Union Army medical examination after his bare back was “mutilated by a whipping delivered by his enslavers.” Images of Gordon published in Harper’s Weekly in 1863 were one factor that led to the growing public opposition to slavery.
Emancipation begins streaming on Friday, Dec. 9, on Apple TV+.
