Crystal Gayle Brenda Gail Webb, better known by her stage name Crystal Gayle, was born on January 9th, 1951 in Paintsville, Kentucky, in the United States. Her parents were Melvin “Tedd Webb” and Clara “Clary” Webb. Black lung illness was passed down from Gayle’s coal miner father to his daughter. When Gayle was four years old, her family uprooted and relocated to Wabash Indiana in the hopes of finding better medical treatment for her.

Clara Webb worked as a nurse’s aide, and the couple made their home in a neighbourhood for retired miners. Ted Webb passed away in 1959 as a result of a stroke.
