Clarissa Luard was born on December 5, 1948 in Essex, England. She was a literature administrator at the Arts Council.

After receiving a distinction on his arts management diploma, Luard started working for the Arts Council in 1995. The project did not appear to be specifically tailored for her at first, but she swiftly cut the available fabric to her own pattern, and her work gained the respect and admiration of publishers, national organizations like the Book Trust and writers.

When she was hired as Paul Elek Ltd.’s publicity manager in 1974, Luard made her writing debut. By that time, she had moved in with Salman Rushdie, a gifted writer who had not yet had a book published. The two had married in 1976 after meeting at a concert in 1969. In 1979, they welcomed their son Zafar into the world.
