Atonement director dumps fiance for wedding invites with hot tub photo
You may not have heard of 29-year-old British actress Rosamund Pike, best known for playing villainess Bond Girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, but the way her engagement to Atonement director Joe Wright ended is an interesting one. Supposedly Pike sent out hundreds of cheesy wedding invitations to friends and family that featured a photo of her and Wright in a hot tub. She had never asked Wright, 36, for his approval for the invitations and he was livid and called off the wedding and their relationship. She was left to cancel the florists, caterers, and venue and to explain to guests that the wedding wasn’t happening. This version of the story has their wedding being canceled just a few days before it was to be held, but an update from the same author says it was planned for September:
The 29-year-old star was due to marry last month [sic: update from same source says their wedding was to be in September] but the wedding was called off at the last minute after Miss Pike told friends she couldn’t go through with it.
According to friends, the actress is devastated about the split and cancellation.
Wright, 35, proposed on the shores of Lake Como in northern Italy earlier this year and the wedding was to have taken place in England last weekend. [Again, update says wedding is in September]
My source says: ‘It’s not common knowledge and only a few people know. Rosamund obviously wants to keep it as private as possible but she is devastated. She’s a lovely girl and we all feel very sorry for her.
‘She was meant to be out at a party on Thursday night but she cancelled at the last minute. She just couldn’t face going out.’
Rosamund’s mother, who had been planning the wedding, has been consoling her daughter and cancelling florists and cake orders.
Meanwhile, Wright has been hitting the London party scene. ‘Joe was out four weeks ago at a party. He was surrounded by girls and ended up taking a group of them to a strip club. He’s a regular there and all the dancers know him,’ says my scantily clad spy.

That was the first version which had the bride calling it off, but an update from The Daily Mail is much more juicy:
I have further revelations following my report last week that the wedding between actress Rosamund Pike and her film director fiance Joe Wright had been suddenly called off.
It appears that Wright put an end to the September nuptials after 29-year-old former Bond girl Ros sent out hundreds of wedding invitations without his approval.
‘The invitations featured a picture of them together in a hot tub,’ says a pal.
‘Joe dumped her for sending them without consulting him and she had to tell all the guests the wedding was off.’
To add insult to injury, Wright was then spotted cavorting with a handful of girls at his local lap-dancing club in Shoreditch just days later. Charming.

It’s unclear from these two reports whether their wedding was to take place in September or if it was canceled just a few days before, as the first report suggests. It sounds like the September wedding story is more accurate. This was probably just the straw that made their already tenuous relationship collapse, and Wright was likely just looking for an excuse. It does seem tasteless to send out wedding invitations with a hot tub photo on them, but it’s something you could laugh over if you were committed enough to the relationship and didn’t take yourself too seriously. I bet she invited a bunch of extra people and was planning a super lavish wedding that the groom wasn’t on board with either. Remember when Affleck and J.Lo canceled their wedding at the last minute, citing media pressure? Better to waste the money on a canceled reception than pay for an expensive divorce.
Here are Joe Wright and Rosamund Pike. They met when he was directing her as Jane Bennett in Pride and Prejudice in 2005. They are shown on 12/22/07 shopping, at the Atonement Premiere on 12/6/07, and at a BAFTA after party on 2/10/08. Thanks to WENN.
